Today Science

Flame And Fire

In room 16 today we did some can crushing, well kinda.  We did 6 experiments, 1 for each group, and I got chosen to do experiment 2, with Jasmine, Jill, Pia and Kayla.  In our experiment we had to boil water in a 355ml can, but put the can into cold water with no ice.

What we needed a meths burner, a tripod, some gorse, a metal can, a measuring cup filled with water, a pipet and some cold water, to do this experiment.

When we first started Jill noticed that the gorse on top of the tripod was all burnt apart from the middle of the gorse, were the meths burner was burning, was not burnt.  We got a silver can and we think that is why when we put the can on the fire, we saw instant condensation around the bottom of the outside of the can, it was easier to see with a light coloured can.  After 5 minutes the bottom of the can was already burnt and almost halve of the can was burning.

After 10 minute the can was steaming and very hot, ( do remember do not touch the tripod or your skin will stick to the tripod and not come off.  In our experiment we took the can off the tripod and dunked it into the cold water and the can instantly crushed from the air acting like a giant vacuum inside the silver can.  When we got the can out it was cold and cracks in it plus a very squashed inside.

From all 6 experiments only 4 worked and two failed, proving that you need moisture inside or outside of the can to get a reaction.

This is Pia, Jill and Kayla, putting water into the can, the first time we did this experiment all together.
